Reusable Grasshopper workflow that maps how sunlight reflected off an organic building facade lands on the surrounding context, flagging the zones that cross safety thresholds. Built as a consultancy for an engineering firm, which approved the methodology and carried it through to final client delivery.
An engineering firm needed to know where sunlight reflected off an organic building facade would land on the surrounding context, and which of those zones crossed safety thresholds.
Ray tracing an organic facade against its context is heavy computational work: merge components carelessly and the whole workflow has to be rebuilt. And the deliverable had to be a methodology the firm could defend to their own client, not a single result.
A reusable Grasshopper workflow assembled incrementally: each piece of logic validated in isolation before merging, Ladybug for the solar geometry, Anemone loops for the iterative tracing, and structured data trees to keep the heavy runs manageable and the results traceable.
Independent consultant. Methodology, implementation, documentation, and the client sessions that made the results interpretable.
The firm approved the methodology and carried it through to final client delivery. The workflow is reusable on other facades rather than tied to this building.
This consultancy project combined my first professional use of Ladybug and Anemone, which I had only touched in academic settings, with heavy computational logic. It reinforced the importance of incremental development and careful workflow management.
Beyond the technical execution, it highlighted how crucial client communication is in consultancy work. Success wasn't just delivering a working analysis; it was making sure the client understood what the tool could do, how to interpret the results, and what limitations existed. That balance has become a cornerstone of how I approach consultancy.
